Frequently Asked Questions

First let’s clear up who’s who in the StuffHire zoo…

Hirer – the owner of the item. Someone who hires stuff TO other people.

Hiree – the borrower of an item. Someone who hires stuff FROM other people.

Is it free to list on StuffHire?

Yes, absolutely!

How many listings can I have on StuffHire at once?

Currently you can list unlimited items on StuffHire.

How long will my listing stay up after I post it?

It will stay up as long as the StuffHire website exists (we’re hoping that’s forever…). You can choose to pause your listing if you have times when you don’t want to hire it, or your item is seasonal. If you do that, the listing will stay in your profile, and you can activate it any time you like.

What categories should I list my item in?

This should be logical, and we’d like people to only list in categories that will be suitable for the item you own. However, if you have an item that doesn’t fit into any available category, please contact us at team@stuffhire.com.au and we’ll set one up for you.

Why can I only list in two categories?

We limit the number of categories to two at the moment because we feel that would be enough for most items. We've limited our categories so they fill up faster. Once we start to see hundreds of listings we'll introduce more categories and sub-categories, and introduce the ability to list to multiple of these. But what we don't want to see is people listing items in incorrect categories or sub-categories trying to be seen by more people... it's frustrating for someone who's looking for an Angle Grinder to come across Sewing Machines.

Do StuffHire hire anything to the public?

No. StuffHire is a public marketplace specifically for peer-to-peer hiring. We just enable Hirers and Hirees to find each other.

Will StuffHire replace a lost, stolen or broken item?

No. The item was bought by the Hirer, so is the responsibility of the Hirer. Once in the care of the Hiree, it’s their responsibility to look after the item. This is why we recommend insurance and making sure a bond is taken at the time of hiring. You can read our terms & conditions here.

What can I do if the product I hired is faulty?

We’re sorry to hear that! The first thing you should do is contact the Hirer. It’s their responsibility to make sure the item is in good working order (and it was probably an honest mistake). StuffHire is not involved in the day-to-day hiring of stuff, we simply give people the tools to do it themselves.

What can I do if I hired an item out, but the Hiree hasn’t returned it on time?

If it’s only a little overdue, try contacting the customer to see if they may have been delayed in returning the item… after all, stuff happens. If the item is long overdue to be returned, you’ve had no success contacting the Hiree, and you suspect that it’s been stolen, contact the Police immediately.

We recommend prevention rather than cure though, so we'll be adding some valuable tips and tricks to our site for you to refer to when becoming a Hirer. We think it's wise to put some stuff in place to make sure everyone has a positive hiring experience.

Do you have any suggestions on ways I can take a bond?

Good ol’ cash works for a lot of people, but depending on the amount, that might be difficult. If it’s a large amount of money, then direct transfer into a bank might be better. There are also other electronic methods and apps that might work for you.

Square is a point-of-sale system that’s inexpensive and works like an eftpos machine. You can take payments and deposits easily. There are no monthly fees so you only pay when you use it. It runs through your phone or tablet too, which means no bulky equipment. Please note we are not endorsing the product, and are not involved with them in any way, we just think it's a great system that might help you.

Some banks might also be able to take payments smartphone to smartphone instantly via their app. When the item’s returned, you can just do the same thing again in reverse, paying them back their deposit.

However you do this, make sure you give the Hiree a receipt for their deposit and the money paid for the hire of the item.

How long will it take for me to get my deposit back?

This is a question for the Hirer. It will depend on how you paid the deposit. You need to make sure you’re covering all the bases before you take the item, and ensure the Hirer gave you a receipt. Remember, most people are honest, so work with the Hirer closely to ensure you have a positive hiring experience.

I’m a bit worried about hiring my stuff. What if someone steals or damages it?

We get it. You love your stuff, and you want to be able to use it too, so you don’t want people trashing it. But here’s the thing… other people are already hiring stuff just like yours and they wouldn’t do it if it was always coming back trashed. The first time, you’ll be pacing all day and night like a first time dad in a 50s hospital waiting room. But after it comes back just like it was when it left you, you’ll relax. People are mostly good and will respect your stuff. If they don’t, you insured it (if it’s valuable) and took a bond to cover the excess, so you’ll be able to get it repaired, or replaced.

What do I do if I have problems setting up or using StuffHire?

It's a pretty easy app to use, but we know that sometimes things just don't come naturally to all people. Soon we'll have some How To's you can take a look at, but in the meantime, if you run into issues setting up or using your account, please feel free to contact us via team@stuffhire.com.au and we'll point you in the right direction. We're good like that.

Can I sign in with Facebook?

Not at this time. You can log in with Google though!

What do I do if I've forgotten my password?

It happens to us all at some point with so many passwords to remember. If you're on the login page, you can click on the Forgotten Passwork link. But here it is again for your convenience: Forgotten password

I've noticed things that could be improved. How do I give my feedback?

StuffHire is the new kid on the block. And while we're confident we have a great product, we need people on the site using it and testing it to make sure it's as good as we think it is. By using it and seeing things that need to be improved, we will go from strength to strength. Your feedback is essential to our success. We want you to tell us what you love, what you think could be improved, and what you'd like to see in the future. Just email us at team@stuffhire.com.au... we're waiting with baited breath for your feedback. For real.
